In my line of work, which is customer service and currently in the banking industry, I am given the opportunity to hear many interesting views on things. Some of these are just too precious to keep to myself, so I will share them from time to time in the spirit of generosity as well as with cautionary intent (i.e. everyone in the US is generally allowed to vote, reproduce and drive). I will spare the gruesome details of how the statement came to be uttered and my response to it, most of the time.
My favorite this week: "The government never has anything to do with the banks," from a caller who did not believe that there are any laws or regulations regarding...anything.
Compare that with the young lady who wanted "the phone number of the government agency who oversees overdraft funds."
"You don't have to keep track of your money anymore. The bank does it for you." Which apparently is a corollary to the distressingly common:
"I don't keep track of what I spend. That's what the 800 number is for. You call up and it tells you how much you can go over."
Then usually follows: "Why did you let me spend money I don't have?"
Which may actually be a good idea for a new national motto.
